If you have a job that requires you to spend a significant amount of time at a desk, then you’ll want to ensure that it’s a place that inspires you, is conducive to producing great work, but most of all, is your little home away from home. The type of environment that you work in can have a huge impact on your ability to perform at your best so it’s important to do what you can to make your little space in the office an inviting and organised one. Use these helpful tips and transform your desk from drab to fab in no time.
Clear the clutter
A desk that is cluttered can start to feel like it’s closing in on you, which can only lead to you feeling overwhelmed. It’s a strong belief that the appearance of your desk is a good reflection of what it’s like inside your head – if your desk is a mess, then the chances are that your mind may also be all over the place. There will be times when papers and documents pile up on your desk, of course, but try and keep that to a minimum. Find time to go through the things on your desk every so often to avoid unwanted clutter and throw away any unwanted items or papers. A cleaner space will instantly make way for clearer thinking.
Once you’ve de-cluttered, the next step is to organise. Getting organised doesn’t have to be boring – there are many fun and interesting ways to keep things in check. Try using tin cans as stationery holders or an old spice rack as storage for small items such as paper clips, rubber bands and staples. Colour is a great way to give your desk an instant sprucing up so when it comes to things such as file dividers and notepads, try and get some colourful options. At the end of the day, having a more organised desk will help to improve your time management and will make a range of daily work processes run that much smoother.
And there was light!
Not all of us are lucky enough to work in an office that has lots of natural light, and in fact, some individual offices may not even have a window. Nothing beats natural sunshine but the next best thing is to invest in a quality lamp that gives off a warm glow, yet one that is still able to brighten up the office space. Light, or the lack thereof, can really negatively affect a person’s mood, so do what you can to make your office a warm and inviting space. Avoid sterile, white lighting at all costs.
Bring the outdoors in
Green is a colour very often associated with inventiveness, so if you can, introduce some greenery on your desk. Pot plants are an excellent way to do this and they are low maintenance, so you get a burst of greenery on your desk with very little work on your part. Even the smallest of plants, such as a cactus, can bring renewed energy to your previously dull desk. Flowers also brighten up a space and add a sweet aroma to your surroundings. Having natural elements around you in your working space can be very uplifting and can easily cheer you up. Remember: If you share your office space with another person, first check with them to see if they perhaps have any allergies to particular flowers so you can avoid purchasing those.
The last point and probably the most fun, is adding a personal touch to your desk space. Personalising a space immediately gives it warmth and especially when it’s a desk, personal knick-knacks can make all the difference. Some people opt for up-lifting quotes, whilst others display sentimental souvenirs or photographs of loved ones. Whatever you choose, just make sure it’s meaningful to you because you’ll be spending a fair amount of time sitting at that desk, so you’ll want to make it your own.
There are so many little changes you can make to your desk space to transform it from being a dull and drab space – you’ll be surprised at what a mini desk makeover can do for your productivity and motivation levels.
